  • Enough with the pink & purple?

I was at a beauty salon one day, selling my jewelry, and a smart little girl of 5 sat down next to my jewelry table, dressed in the requisite pink & purple outfit.  She was curious about my jewelry.

Her mom was having her hair colored and the poor kid was going to be there for a while, so I thought I'd help out by keeping her occupied.  I suggested a game--she could decide which pieces she liked best from each category of earrings, bracelets, and necklaces.

She looked carefully, returned again and again, and took her time thinking through her choices.  In every case she found an interesting piece.  She had sophisticated taste in that she was able to see beauty in even the non-obvious pieces.  She picked a pair of earrings in natural nuggets of deep-blue lapis, a bright green chalk turquoise necklace, soft carnelian and silver earrings, and a brown bracelet.

When her mom saw what she was doing, she said, "I bet I know which ones she picked" and pointed to the pinks and violets.  Then her daughter showed her what she had actually chosen, and I don't know if I've ever seen such a look of surprise (and disappointment) on a mom's face.  I said, "Your little girl has a very good eye for color and shape." She was still stunned: "I thought she'd surely pick something pink."

I'm not saying pink and violet aren't pretty colors.  But they're only two colors in the enormous, glorious spectrum of gorgeous colors we have in this world.

Moms, could we please give our girls a chance to be reach beyond Barbie stereotypes?  What do you think?

About Me

  • I love making things--jewelry, purses, paintings, odd things out of nothing. I've always loved design of all kinds--clothing, architecture, graphic, urban. The ways in which things can be arranged fascinates me. I'm also constantly looking for interesting things to read, listen to, and watch. I love swimming and the outdoors, and if I didn't live in the desert (Arizona), I'd live on the New Jersey shore. You can read my book and movie reviews at www.jojoba.vox.com, and see my jewelry and artwork at www.allthingsbarbara.etsy.com. Thanks for visiting me!
